He & She Eat Clean in Oxygen Magazine!

Share

One of our favorite days of the month is when we get our new Oxygen Magazine in the mail. Another blogger posted on our Facebook page that we were in it so of course we freaked out trying to find our name in the magazine.  If you have the May issue we are on pg 35. This is probably nothing to some but just this little typing of our blog meant the WORLD to us. We just randomly posted on their Facebook page because the shake was THAT GOOD & they printed it in the magazine.  How cool!

We are NOT kidding...if you have not tried this shake yet you MUST!

The protein shake itself is in the March 2012 issue on pg 70.  We are going to be very nice & include it for you here so that you can try it even if you do not have the magazine!

*We have made some slight changes to the recipe.

Ingredients:
6 oz unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 banana
1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 Tbsp natural peanut butter
1 scoop whey protein powder
Honey, to taste (optional)
Ice cubes

Directions:
Blend all ingredients in a blender.

Makes 1 serving

  2. What is the best time to drink this shake?

    1. Oxygen suggests drinking it at bedtime due to the slow processing of the protein in the cottage cheese.

However, we are a little concerned about the sugar content (from the banana and the optional honey) later at night. I typically try to drink this shake as a meal before 2pm. I do find that it keeps me fuller, longer.

  7. I'm starting the LiveFit program tomorrow. I've struggled for years (like my WHOLE life!) with my weight and I *think* I'm finally ready to make some serious changes. My supplements came in today and tomorrow is go day. So of course I'm up late tonight searching recipes. I've got this one book marked. Can't wait to try it!

  9. I am not fond of the flavor or texture of cottage cheese. Would greek yogurt be a decent substitute in these shakes? Thanks!

    1. Hi Machel! I hated cottage cheese as well. You cannot taste it in this recipe. Friendship is the only brand of cottage cheese that I will eat. You should try that one. Don't let the cottage cheese sway you from trying any of our recipes...you would never know there was cottage cheese in most of them!

  10. Just made this recipe tonight...YUMMM!! This is literally the first protein shake I have found that I actually like. I was kind of not sure since you put cottage cheese and PB together...but FYI to others, you can't taste the flavor or texture of cottage cheese at all. This is definitely going on my daily diet plan!! THANK YOU!

  11. Just made this and it was great! I left out the honey and whey powder and added a cup of baby spinach! Fantastic. According to mfp's calculations it was:
    265 calories
    31 carbs
    8grams fat
    19 g protein
    3 fiber
    394 sodium

  12. i love this recipe. i make it for breakfast tho, is that ok? and i had to omit the powder cuz it was to expensive for me right now.

Also, what are your thoughts on nutela?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Stephanie!

It is absolutely fine to have this for breakfast. Just remember that the shake is meant to help build muscle and you can't do that without adequate amounts of protein. I would encourage you to get some when you can!

Nutela, while it may taste good, does have quite a few additives that are not considered "clean" such as soy lecithin and vanillan, an artificial flavoring.

      Thanks for visiting our site!

  13. I have a question, can you use this shake as a meal replacement throughout the day? I like this shake a lot and have been drinking one for breakfast as well as lunch on some days. Is this ok to drink in place of a meal more than once in a day? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Mandy! You can use it as a meal replacement shake; however, I would try to limit your shakes & try to eat whole foods when possible. It's okay every once in a while to have a shake more than once but I wouldn't rely on it too much. You will get better results with whole foods. Hope this helps!

  14. I have found that so many clean and whole food recipes require bananas. I am allergic. Do you have any good suggestions for substitute for them. Also allergic to avacadoes. I know it is tragic. I would love to try this but I feel like I would need a fruity flavor in there. Thanks

    1. I was just thinking about trying out a new fruit in this shake so it is very interesting that you made this comment! Do you like mango? I may try it with mango one day. Something else that you could try is unsweetened applesauce (or baby food applesauce if you do not want to buy an entire container). I'll try it this way & let you know how it comes out. If you try it before me let us know what you think!

  17. Is the cottage cheese absolutely necessary? Or do you know of any dairy-free substitutes? I'm lactose intolerant and have a dairy-free protein powder that I like but haven't tried any of the dairy-free cottage cheeses and I've heard they aren't very good.

  18. Can I use almond butter in place of the peanut butter?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, absolutely! Almond butter is a little lower in saturated fat, even though the peanut butter doesn't have enough to be of much concern.

      Hope this helps!

  20. I've been making this almost every morning and absolutely love it! I don't use the honey because the peanut butter and banana make it sweet enough for me. I like the idea of using chocolate protein powder (mmmmm... chocolate...) and may change the fruit and exchange the peanut butter for applesauce to see what I come up with. The original is darn good, though! Thanks so much for sharing this.

  21. Is there anything that can be used in lieu of peanut butter? Severe nut allergy :(

    1. Lex, are you allergic to all nuts? If so, you could throw a tablespoon of whole sunflower seeds into the blender. Hope that helps!

  22. Best shake I have made in a while! I used almond butter instead of peanut butter, and plain greet yogurt instead of cottage cheese- I didn't happen to have the cottage cheese or peanut butter so I improvised and it was sooo good!

Can't wait until after my workout today- small amount goes a long way

    Thanks

  24. So this would be a typical M6 option? Would this be acceptable as a pre or post workout meal? If not do you guys have any options for pre/post workout meals? Right now I am doing 1/2c oatmeal and 1scoop protein powder but it's getting old. :) thank you and btw I have tried two recipes so far and they are both a hit!

  28. Made this last night without honey, and with almond butter. It was phenomenal! I was a little worried about the cottage cheese, since I can only do a very small amount of lactose at a time. Quick, easy, Yummy, and no digestive issues. Yep, this is a keeper!
